At 8h pm Wednesday April 6th 2016 a protest turned into violent riots in the streets of Montreal-Nord, a suburb just north of St-Leonard in Montreal, Canada. Initially about a hundred people gathered at Parc Henri-Bourassa at the intersection of Rolland Blvd and Pascal St in Montreal-Nord. A protest was organised after the deadly outcome of a recent police shooting in which Jean-Pierre Bony died. He was shot with a a kind of plastic bullet fired from a weapon called ''intermediate weapon'' on Thursday March 31st by tactical officers at Montreal Police SPVM. (Service de Police de la Ville de Montreal)
Protesters started marching and took over the streets to express their anger. Some of them held signs with a reminder of people who have died in police shootings. Slogans against police could be heard but the mob of protesters seemed disorganized and mixed. At some point the pacific protest turned violent and people started smashing car windows with hammers and crowbars. People holding protest signs faded out and more violent rioters started to throw rocks and bricks at the SPVM police station ''Poste de Cartier 39''. They vandalized the symbolic building by emptying a fire extinguisher into the front windows. Masked people broke the police station's windows with various projectiles until riot officers backups arrived. In a war-like scene a group of riot cops shot a projectile towards rioters who replied by shooting fireworks in their direction. Then a small mob of people broke a nearby bank's window at a BMO location before trying to set it on fire by throwing burning debris. Shortly after, riot officers advanced and pushed the rioters away. Montreal fire department SIM (Service d'Incendie de Montreal) then arrived and fought the blaze.
At 11h pm nothing was under control and the situation degenerated. The mob of violent rioters walked back north towards the point of origin of the protest at Parc Henri-Bourassa only to keep destroying public property and setting cars on fire. Multiple blazes, most of them burning cars and recycle bins, were reported in the area of Pierre Street and Langellier Blvd. Most of the fires were set on Arthur Chevrier Street at the corner which happens to be the very same area where Jean-Pierre Bony was shot and killed by SPVM officers. Firemen stood away from the scene in safety and waited long minutes before riot officers were dispatched to deem the scene safe for FD. Incidents involving fires faded out the following hour and as of midnight were mainly all under control, according to SIM fire department. According to SPVM media officer Ian Lafrenière no arrest have been made as of midnight.
